    Advances in Atomic Data for Neutron-Capture Elements

    Neutron(n)-capture elements (atomic number Z>30), which can be produced in planetary nebula (PN) progenitor stars via s-process nucleosynthesis, have been detected in nearly 100 PNe. This demonstrates that nebular spectroscopy is a potentially powerful tool for studying the production and chemical evolution of trans-iron elements. However, significant challenges must be addressed before this goal can be achieved. One of the most substantial hurdles is the lack of atomic data for n-capture elements, particularly that needed to solve for their ionization equilibrium (and hence to convert ionic abundances to elemental abundances). To address this need, we have computed photoionization cross sections and radiative and dielectronic recombination rate coefficients for the first six ions of Se and Kr. The calculations were benchmarked against experimental photoionization cross section measurements. In addition, we computed charge transfer (CT) rate coefficients for ions of six n-capture elements.     A maximum likelihood estimate of natural mortality for brown tiger prawn (Penaeus esculentus) in Moreton Bay (Australia)

    The delay difference model was implemented to fit 21 years of brown tiger prawn (Penaeus esculentus) catch in Moreton Bay by maximum likelihood to assess the status of this stock. Monte Carlo simulations testing of the stock assessment software coded in C++ showed that the model could estimate simultaneously natural mortality in addition to catchability, recruitment and initial biomasses. Applied to logbooks data collected from 1990 to 2010, this implementation of the delay difference provided for the first time an estimate of natural mortality for brown tiger prawn in Moreton Bay, equal to 0.031±0.0020.031 \pm 0.002 week−1^{-1}. This estimate is approximately 30\% lower than the value of natural mortality (0.045 week−1^{-1}) used in previous stock assessments of this species

    A Two-sided-Loop X-Ray Solar Coronal Jet and a Sudden Photospheric Magnetic-field Change, Both Driven by a Minifilament Eruption

    Most of the commonly discussed solar coronal jets are of the type consisting of a single spire extending approximately vertically from near the solar surface into the corona. Recent research of a substantial number of events shows that eruption of a miniature filament (minifilament) drives at least many such single-spire jets, and concurrently generates a miniflare at the eruption site. A different type of coronal jet, identified in X-ray images during the Yohkoh era, are two-sided-loop jets, which extend from a central excitation location in opposite directions, along two opposite low-lying coronal loops that are more-or-less horizontal to the surface. We observe such a two-sided-loop jet from the edge of active region (AR) 12473, using data from Hinode XRT and EIS, and SDO AIA and HMI. Similar to single-spire jets, this two-sided-loop jet results from eruption of a minifilament, which accelerates to over 140 km/s before abruptly stopping upon striking overlying nearlyhorizontal magnetic field at 30,000 km altitude and producing the two-sided-loop jet via interchange reconnection. Analysis of EIS raster scans show that a hot brightening, consistent with a small flare, develops in the aftermath of the eruption, and that Doppler motions (40 km/s) occur near the jet-formation region. As with many single-spire jets, the trigger of the eruption here is apparently magnetic flux cancelation, which occurs at a rate of 410^18 Mx/hr, comparable to the rate observed in some single-spire AR jets. This example of a two-sided jet, along with numerous examples of single-spire jets, supports that essentially all coronal jets result from eruptions of minifiaments, and frequently the eruption of the minifilment is triggered by magnetic flux cancelation.     Algal turfs are likely to rise in prominence on coral reefs in the Anthropocene. In these ecosystems the sediments bound within algal turfs will shape ecosystem functions and the services humanity can obtain from reefs. However, while interest is growing in the role of algal turf sediments, studies remain limited. In this review we provide an overview of our knowledge to-date concerning algal turf sediments on coral reefs. Specifically, we highlight what algal turf sediments are, their role in key ecosystem processes, the potential importance of algal turf sediments on Anthropocene reefs, and key knowledge gaps for future research. The evidence suggests that the management of algal turf sediments will be critically important if we are to sustain key functions and services on highly-altered, Anthropocene coral reef configurations

    Functional links on coral reefs: urchins and triggerfishes, a cautionary tale

    Urchins are ubiquitous components of coral reefs ecosystems, with significant roles in bioerosion and herbivory. By controlling urchin densities, triggerfishes have been identified as keystone predators. However, the functional linkages between urchins and triggerfishes, in terms of distributional patterns and concomitant effects on ecosystem processes, are not well understood, especially in relatively unexploited systems. To address this we censused urchins and triggerfishes on two cross-shelf surveys on the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) at the same times and locations. We also evaluated the role of urchins in bioerosion. Although urchin abundance and triggerfish biomass varied by 80% and nearly 900% across sites, respectively, this variability was driven primarily by shelf position with no evidence of top-down control on urchins by triggerfishes. Low urchin abundances meant urchins only played a minor role in bioerosion. We highlight the potential variability in functional links, and contributions to ecosystem processes, among regions
